step 1 distribute the -5

-5 * 6x = -30x

-5 * 6 = -30

we now have 30 = -30x - 30

step 2 add 30 to each side

30 + 30 = 60

-30 + 30 cancels out

we now have 60 = -30x

step 3 divide each side by -30

-30x/-30 = x

60 / -30 = -2

we're left with x = -2
