In his opening statement, Richard M. Nixon first agrees with John F. Kennedy's submission that America was in competition with other nations hence the need to make progress. He, however, disagrees that America was at a standstill and not making progress. He supported this argument by citing several achievements America has made over the past years of his administration compared against other administrations.
