x² + 8x + 12

Explanation:

Area of a rectangle = length × width

Original dimensions:

Width = x

Length = x + 4

James will increase both dimensions of the floor by 2 feet

New dimensions:

Width = x + 2

Length = x + 4 + 2

= x + 6

Area of the new rectangle = length × width

= (x + 2) × (x + 6)

= x² + 6x + 2x + 12

= x² + 8x + 12
