why was there so many japanese-canadians in 1942?

Many of the Japanese nationals removed from the coast after January 14, 1942, were sent to road camps in the BC interior or sugar beet projects on the Prairies, such as in Taber, Alberta. ... The Japanese-Canadian labourers were used as a solution to a shortage of farm workers.
