Four years ago my father’s age was 4 times that of my age. At present the sum of my father’s age and that of mine is 53 years. What is my father’s present age.​

Answer:

Your father's present is 40 years old.

Explanation:

Let's father's age be x and ur age be y (present),

x - 4 = 4(y - 4)

x - 4 = 4y - 16

4y - x = 12...eqn i

x + y = 53...

x = 53 - y..eqn ii,

substituting eqn ii in eqn i,

4y - x = 12

or, 4y - (53 - y) = 12

or, 4y - 53 + y = 12

or, 5y = 53 + 12

or, 5y = 65

so, y = 13

now,

x = 53 - y

so, x = 53 - 13 = 40
