While nitrogen and carbon dioxide are both released into the atmosphere by erosion at sites of uplift, the majority is introduced by volcanism. When rock undergoes subduction at oceanic trenches,it melts in the asthenosphere. The atoms from the rock eventually rise as high density slush, melting their way through rock layers. If it reaches the surface, it will produce one of several formation types known as volcanoes.
