How did the events of the 1980s and 90s help to achieve, maintain, or threaten world peace?

In the late 1980 and early 1990s the fall of Communism and the replacement of republics sent world peace. The world did not have to worry about Nuclear Annihilation. As during the Cold War both sides had nuclear weapons and the world came close to nuclear annihilation. The fall of the U.S.S.R made the United States the sole superpower.
