Joshua and Kay are out for a walk on a

rainy day. They come to the edge of a large,
circular puddle that has a radius of 3 feet.
Joshua is wearing boots, so he walks straight
through the center of the puddle to the
other side. Kay forgot to wear her boots, so
she walks around the outside of the puddle
to meet Joshua on the other side.
How much farther, in feet, did Kay walk
than Joshua? (Use 3.14 for π.)

Answer:

3.42 feet

Explanation:

Joshua walked 3 x 2 = 6 feet

Kay walked approximately (3.14 x 6)/2 or 9.42 feet

9.42 - 6 = 3.42 feet

Kay walked 3.42 feet further than Joshua.
