70 points! Earthquakes are the result of movement of the Earth's crust along fault lines both within and along tectonic plate boundaries Earthquakes cause two classes of seismic waves to occur body waves and
surface waves
Body waves. The p-wave propagates as a compression wave that moves through both solid and fluid materials. The s-wave is an undulating wave that moves the medium perpendicular to the direction of
propagation of the wave S-waves do not propagate through any medium that is liquid.
Surface waves - surface waves travel much slower compared to either p- or S waves . Surface waves called love waves and Rayleigh waves are responsible for the destructive effects that earth quacks have on the landscape and ma made structures.
Body waves travel deep into the Earth and are reflected by the core returning to the surface layers of the planet many thousands of miles away from where the actual earthquake event occurred. Scientists
have been able to use this property of seismic waves to study the internal structure of the Earth.
What property of body seismic waves has allowed scientists to determine that the core of the Earth is composed of two layers, an outer core of molten metals and an inner core of solid metals like nickel and
iron?
A only p waves caused by an earthquake transfer enough energy to reach the core of the earth and be reflected back to the surface.
B only p waves cause by an earthquake can be detected after reflection from the core of the planet.
C only S waves cause by an earthquake can be detected after traveling though the earth at distances large enough to make them useful to scientists.
D S waves do not pass through any fluid medium, so S waves are not reflected from the core of earth.
