A number is divided into two parts, such that one part is 10 more than the other. If the two parts are in the ratio 5:3, find the number and the two parts.

Answer:

25 and 15

Explanation:

Since we were given two parts to be in ratio 5:3

the first number is then 5x , and second number 3x

Note that the second number is more than the first so it becomes

3x + 10

5x = 3x +10, 5x - 3x = 10

2x = 10, x = 5

from the question, we find the two parts ;

the first number would be 5x

5 x 5 = 25

and second number, 3x = 3x 5 = 15

so the two numbers are 25 and 15.. 25 + 15 = 40
