13. Becky and Scott rode their bicycles to school. Becky rode 8 km in 15 min., while Scott rode 12 km in

25 min. Who rode faster? Justify your answer.

Calculate their speed to see who rode faster.

Speed = Distance ÷ Time

Change the unit from minutes to hours so that the answers are in km/h.

Becky's speed


= 8 / (15)/(60)


= 8 / 0.25

= 32 km/h

Scott's speed


= 12 / (25)/(60)


= 12 / 0.41666...

= 28.8 km/h (rounded to the nearest tenth)

∵ 32 km/h > 28.8 km/h

∴ Becky rode faster.
