Why didn't Islam spread to Africa?

Although European powers led to the decline of the Umarian state and the Sokoto Caliphate, the colonial rule did little to stop the spread of Islam in West Africa. The British used anti-slavery rhetoric as they began their conquest of the Sokoto Caliphate in 1897.
