Because if the human population grow the Arctic grows faster too. It had to be the same to balance it,

The loss of Arctic ice will most likely lead to further climate change. Climate change affects plants, animals, the weather, commerce, etc. All of these things affect our food supplies.

It will also contribute to sea-level rise, both as it melts into the oceans and as the warming water expands.
