If the 14th Amendment was adopted in 1868, why did

it take nearly one hundred years for segregation to be eradicated in the South?

It took so long for the Supreme Court to apply the Fourteenth Amendment to state authorities because of a deeply-embedded principle at the heart of the original Bill of Rights that it was state governments that needed protection from federal overreach.
