To simplify, we use PEMDAS. Since a number near a parentheses means multiplication, and there is no other operations that we need to do first, we do the multiplication first. 2(-5) = 2*(-5) = -10.
Next we add -8 and -10. -8+(-10) is the same as -8-10, which is -18. Hope this helps
