In Act 3 Scene 5, Romeo and Juliet spend a lot of time talking about birds. It is obvious their discussion is about more than birds. In this case, they are acting as a symbol. What do you think the birds represent? What are they a symbol for in this text? When confronted with this situation, Juliet announces that the bird they heard was a lark, that it is dawn, and that he must run.
