Explanation:

The reason being, that the larger the negative number, the smaller it gets. Think of it like this:

One person owes another, 8 dollars, and let's say he currently has none. So if he owes 8 dollars and he has none, then it would be 0-8, or, -8.

Now let's say someone else owes 200 dollars, and they have 100 dollars.

If they give 100 dollars, they still need to give another 100, right? so it would be -100 dollars, therefore, a greater debt than the guy with the 8 dollars.

If a negative number looks larger than another, in reality, it's just a bigger debt to pay, so it's smaller worth. -8 is larger than -100 because it's closer to 0.

Last example:
