"Africans from my generation and even today generally have both an English name

and African name. Whites were either unwilling or unable to pronounce an African
name, and considered it uncivilized to have one." How do people from different
ethnic and cultural backgrounds assimilate to fit into America's culture today?

Assimilation into American culture has multiple possible angles. Some of them come from either learning the English, changing names, attending American festivities and celebrating them. Eating what is considered American cuisine.
