I need help with this elimination problem-example-1

Add up the same sides of both equations to eliminate x :

(x - 2y) + (-x + 3y) = 8 + (-5)

(x - x) + (-2y + 3y) = 8 - 5

y = 3

Then

x - 2y = x - 6 = 8 → x = 14
