First- make sure they have the same denominator (the number located at the bottom)

(the denominator is the least common multiple (LCM) or essentially where the numbers meet up)

^ 4 and 16 meets up at 16.

^7/16 already has 16 as the denominator, however 1/4 does not.

Therefore-

1/4 * 4/4 + 7/16 * 1/1

^ 4/16 + 7/16

(they have the same denominator, therefore when you add you DO NOT change the denominator)

4+7 is 11- and you keep the denominator

11/16 is a number which you can NOT simplify.

Therefore ^ 11/16 is your answer
