Why does natural selection act on it’s self?

Natural selection is the environment and forces operating against all organisms in order to prevent them from surviving and reproducing. As a result, creatures that survive can transmit their DNA on to future generations. This makes those DNA sequences the ones to look for.

Therefore, organisms which are able to survive can also pass on their DNA to the next generation. This “selects” for those DNA sequences.
