Students are trying to determine the height of the flagpole at Arlington High. They have measured out a horizontal distance of 40 feet from the flagpole and site the top of it at an angle of elevation of 52o. What is the height, h, of the flagpole? Round your answer to the nearest tenth of a foot.

Given;

Horizontal distance = 40feet (Adjacent)

Angle of elevation = 52 degrees

Required

Height of the pole H (Opposite)

Using the SOH CAH TOA identity

Tan theta = opp/adj

Tan 52 = H/40

H = 40tan 52

H = 40(1.2799)

H = 51.2 feet

Hence height, h, of the flagpole to the nearest tenth is 51.2feet
