I am going to assume that D's expression is actually $2.99+$3.19+$2.59+(-$0.25)+(-$0.40)

= $6.18+$2.59-$0.25-$0.40 [Note: (+)*(-)=(-)]

=$8.77-$0.25-$0.40

=$8.52-$0.40

=$8.12

Explanation:
