Some people believed that we evolved from animals (apes/monkeys) but people who were religous were against these therories. They believed that a higher power or a god created us for a purpose. 2 examples of theses beliefs are believing in Jesus (Christianity) or believing in Allah (Islam). Hope this helped :)
