x=2, y= 4

Explanation:

Equation 1 is 2x-4y = -12

Equation 2 is 2x+y = 8

Subtracting the two equations gives -4y-y = -12-8 (The 2x and the other 2x cancel each other out).

Simplifying we get -5y = -20 and y =4

Substituting y =4 into original equation back we get 2x -4(4) =-12

This equals 2x -16 =-12 and 2x = 4 and x =2
