Eunice Kennedy Shriver had a sister with mental disabilities. Shriver worked hard to improve the way her sister

was treated. In the 1950s, many people saw disabled people only as hospital patients. They were often isolated in
special hospitals or ignored completely. Shriver did not like that. She founded the Special Olympics. This sporting
event allowed disabled persons to display their athletic talents. It made people more aware of the challenges
caused by disabilities. Shriver's games showed the world what these people could do, instead of what they could
