Explanation:

Given

(3a + 1)² - 4a² + 4a - 1 ← expand factor using FOIL

= 9a² + 6a + 1 - 4a² + 4a - 1 ← collect like terms

= 5a² + 10a ← factor out 5a from each term

= 5a(a + 2)
