The giant sequoias on the west coast of the United States are the tallest living things on Earth. The "general Sherman Tree" is the largest of the sequoias with a height of 275 feet and an average diameter of 25 feet (approximately). Assume the tree is a cylinder (it isn't exactly) and ignore the branches.

Part A: What is the volume of the tree?
Part B: What is the surface area of the tree? ( don't include the area of the bases)
Part C: A cubic foot of sequoia wood weighs 30 pounds. How much does the "General Sherman Tree" weight?
The largest animal to ever inhabit the Earth is the blue whale with a maximum weight of approximately 400,000 pounds. How many of these whales would it take to weight the same as the "General Sherman Tree"? ( round all answers to the nearest whole number.)

Explanation:

To Find :-

  • What is the volume of the tree?
  • What is the surface area of the tree?

Solution :-

Since here we are assuming this tree to be cylinder therefore,

> Volume = πr²h

> Volume = 3.14 × (12.5)² × 275

> Volume = 134990.34 ft²

And we know that lateral surface area is ,

> LSA = 2πrh

> LSA = 2 × 3.14 × 12.5 × 275

> LSA = 21598.5 ft

Part C :-

> Weight = Volume × 30

> Weight = 134990.34 × 30

> Weight = 4049709 pounds .

And ,

> no. of whale = 4049709/400000

> no. of whale = 10.12

> No. of whale = 10 ( rounding off)

Answer:

Given:

height of tree[h]=275ft

diameter [d]=25ft

we have

[i] Volume of cylindrical tree =πr²h π×(12.5)²×275=134990.3ft³(approx)

[ii] Lateral surface area =2πrh= 2×π×12.5×275=21598.5ft²

[iii] Weight of General Sherman = 134990.3ft³×30

=4,049,709pounds

[iv] Weight of blue whale = 400,000 pounds.

No. of whale weighted equal to the tree 4,049,709/400,000 =10.12

so 10 whale rounded.
