17 + 23
= 40
23 - 17 = 6 the other person did it right.

Make two equation
First number: A
Second number: B
A + B = 40
A - B = 6
Now use elimination and subtract
2B = 34
B = 17
A + 17 = 40, A = 23
Solution: 17 and 23
