change in the sentence, "...they take the first step toward a metamorphosis from a

Answer:

My belief

Step-by-step explanation:

Metamorphosis is the transition of an immature state to a mature state of an insect. The author uses metamorphosis because it is not an "instant" thing - it takes time. When "change" is implied it can be mistaken for fast instead of slow. The group grew stronger as it turned into a mob over time.
