What idea does the nun communicate when she says, “ You live there?” (p. 5). How does the use of italics communicate the nun’s tone?

Answer:

As owners, the family is no longer at the mercy of landlords. A nun had made Esperanza feel horrible about her former dwelling. She may be proud of her house now that she owns it. Even though the house on Mango Street has improved, it is still not the one Esperanza wants to claim. Society shames Esperanza for the first time for her race and financial class. The nun used italics in her statement, "You live there," to stand out from the rest of her response. Her tone is "Tone Shaming."
