the formula used for this is: f(b) - f(a) / b - a
In this question, a is x = 1, and b is x = 3.
f(a) would be the y value of a, and that would be 3.
f(b) would be the y value of b, which is -4.

So now we plug it into the formula getting:

f(b) - f(a) / b - a
-4 - 3 / 3 - 1
-7 / 2
