x = 6, y = 4

Explanation:

multiply the equation x + 2y = 14 by two then subtract the equation 2x - 6y = - 12 to eliminate x and solve for y:

×2 => 2x + 4y = 28

-) 2x - 6y = -12

10y = 40

=> y = 4

substitute y = 4 to either of the equation 2x - 6y = - 12 OR x + 2y = 14 to solve for x:

=> 2x - 6(4) = -12

=> 2x = 12

=> x = 6
