Explanation:

2x-y=8 ---> y= 8-2x

substitute y=8-2x into x+2y=4

x + 2(8 - 2x) = 4

x + 16 - 4x = 4

-3x = -12

x = -12/-3

x = 4

substitute x=y into y=8-2x

y = 8 - 2(4)

y = 8 - 8

y = 0

therefore,

x+y= 4+0
