A circle is placed in a square with a side length of 8 mm, as shown below. Find the area of the shaded region.

Use the value 3.14 for a, and do not round your answer. Be sure to include the correct unit in your answer.

Answer:

A = 8^2 mm = 64 mm^2 area of square

Radius of circle = 4 mm

a = area of circle = pi R^2 = 3.14 (4 mm)^2 = 3.14 * 16mm^2

A - a = (64 - 50.3) mm^2 = 13.7 mm^2
