Answer: Since World War I caused such great destruction and loss of life, it has been referred to as the “war to end all wars”. Unfortunately, the peace treaty which ended the conflict—the Treaty of Versailles of 1919—imposed harsh punishment on Germany which contributed to the destruction of Europe and set the stage for World War II.
