4.) Why would a fetus who is born at the beginning of the third trimester have a difficult time surviving?

Because the lungs are not fully developed yet. The fetus couldn’t breath on its own without medication that is given in cases of premature birth. And even then, it would be difficult. So after that, they can intubate the infant, but there’s a chance that could be too much on the premature heart.
