It would have been difficult to ensure a profit every year on a large plantation because since to earn profit you would have to earn more than you spend, there are fixed cost to run a plantation (for example cost for providing needs for slaves) The cost to run a planation stays almost the same each year but the price for crops like cotton don't. Making some years more successful than others.
