The Tsugaru Strait in Japan is one of the most dangerous straits in the world. The weather there is unpredictable and often deadly. A typhoon near the strait killed 1,430 people in 1954. Yet people wanted a way to cross the strait without harm. So, the Japanese government built the Seikan Tunnel. It runs 800 feet (243 meters) below the sea. Two stations in the tunnel serve as emergency stops. The Seikan Tunnel was finished in 1988. It is the world's longest railroad tunnel.
