First of all, when we convert numbers to scientific notation, we should recall what scientific notation looks like.

A number in scientific notation looks like that:

____x10^-

____ is the coefficient (it should always be between 1 and 10)

- is the exponent.

1,000 in Scientific notation looks like so:

10x10^2

Now, the exponent doesn't mean that we multiply 10 times 10. It means we take 10 and move the decimal point 2 units to the right (the positive exponent indicates that we move the decimal point to the right)

98,000 in Scientific notation looks like so:
