Slavery was importnat to the economy because the South grew cotton crops, and the crops needed to be harvested. There weren't machines at the time, so the next best thing was manual labor, and for that, they needed slaves. The slaves were picking the cotton and the South was making profit off of it. It was inhumane for the slaves to be working in such harsh conditions, but the money that the south was making was supporting its economy
