My grandmother Edith grew up very poor. Her parents struggled to find work
for the first few years of her life. Since there was no money to buy toys, Edith
was forced to make her own. She would construct dolls out of wooden sticks
and scraps of fabric. Her dad eventually got a job as a railroad engineer. On
Edith's seventh birthday, her parents were finally able to afford a store-bought
doll. Even though she loved and cherished the doll, she had the fondest
memories of the toys she had made on her own.
