Millions of immigrants came into the U.S.from western Europe during the 1840s. Ireland had the potato famine and more than a million people starved to death. This forced hundreds of thousands to the U.S.to look for work and a new life. Many lived in the large cities such as New York and Pennsylvania which doubled in size.
