Game wardens use experiments to help determine the number of wild horses in a national park. Suppose 40 wild horses are caught, tagged, and released back into the national park. Two weeks later 100 wild horses are caught, 4 of which are found to have tags. Using this information, estimate the number of wild horses in the national park.

Answer:

X = 1,000 wild horses

Explanation:

The rate of finding a tagged horse is 4 out of 100, or 4%. We want the total number of horses such that 4% of that number is equal to 40 horses:

(0.04)*(X) = 40 tagged horses

X = 40/(0.04)

X = 1,000 wild horses
