Given:

Final elevation = 8.05 miles

Change in elevation = 1.6 miles

Let Initial elevation which is the elevation before descent = x

Initial elevation - change in = final elevation

(-ve) sign because it was a descent

x - 1.6 = 8.05

x = 8.05 + 1.6

x = 9.65 miles

Hence, elevation before descent is 9.65 miles
