Solving an Equation

There are two approaches to solving the equation -3x + 10 = 4x - 20

Subtract 4x from both sides. OR Add 3x to both sides.

–7x + 10 = –20 OR 10 = 7x – 20

Solve the equation using both approaches.

Answer:

x=30/7

Explanation:

Approach 1.

-3x+10=4x-20

-4x -4x

-7x+10=-20

-10 -10

-7x/-7=-30/-7

x=30/7

Approach 2.

-3x+10=4x-20

+3x +3x

10=7x-20

+20 +20

30/7=7x/7

x=30/7
