When dividing powers that have the same base, subtract the exponents.

So 4³/4⁵ is the same as 4³ ⁻ ⁵ or 4⁻².

When we have a base taken to a negative exponent,

it means the same thing as 1 over the base to the positive exponent.

In other words, we can rewrite 4⁻² as 1/4² or 1/16.
