Before you were born, there was something called the Articles of Confederation. Yes, it was the first form of the Constitution in the United States. However, these Articles fell short of the high expectations the new country had, and the American people thought these Articles needed to be modified or that a new Constitution had to be created.
That is why the delegates of the American states met at the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in order to discuss and debate the creation of you, the new Constitution of the United States.
This important event was called the Constitutional Convention of 1787. During this convention, there were two sides. One was the Federalists that supported the creation of a strong central government. We are talking about people ñlike James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay. On the other hand, there were the Antifederalists like Thomas Jefferson. Patrick Henry, and Samuel Adams. They did not support the idea of having a strong central government but a simple form of government in which citizens and states would have many rights.
During the ratification period, James Madison had a wonderful idea. He drafted the Bill of Rights, which is the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, where there are important rights such as the freedom of speech, the freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the right to have property, the right to be happy, and the freedom of reunion, among others.
