Why didn't the the founding fathers want to vote for the candidates directly?

I am not quite sure but I believe there is two reasons. Not only did the founding fathers distrust the majority due to “democracy”, it was also believed that having the whole country vote was too much since our country is so big. I hope this somewhat helped!
