Primary sources allow the reader glimpse on what the subject is about. It's like traveling back in time and you can read the words spoken/ written by historical figures. You can nit pick there usage of certain words to find the purpose of the text. You can figure out their perspective on a certain subject. You can also figure out what the mentality was like at the time, for example, reading Christopher Columbus's journals on Native South American Populations.
